Mosaic is an ancient decorative technique that developed mainly within the richest and most evolved civilisations such as the Greek-Roman civilisation and, later on, the Christian and Byzantine worlds, where it became the preferred decorative technique.
Mosaic is made up of many small cubes of more or less regular shape, called “tesserae”, which are used to cover a surface previously treated with a binding substance, i.e. a special glue.
The tesserae can be made of different materials: stone, marble, ceramic, mother-of-pearl or glass. Moreover, they will never be perfectly identical, as they are cut by hand by the master mosaicist using special tools such as the tagliolo (a special kind of chisel) and the martellina (a small hammer).
The town mosaicists carry on the language of mosaic by continuously innovating it without losing sight of its roots. The workplace is conceived as an old workshop where mosaics can be bought and ordered.
